The Bun and the Oven

Maxence and I are extraordinarily happy to announce that we are now the proud parents of a little boy named Milan, born in Paris a week ago.

Everything went smoothly, the three of us are doing splendidly, and so far Milan is proving to be a very sweet, easy baby: a good sleeper, a good eater, and an all-around adorable little person if you ask us.

Still, things will likely be a bit more quiet around here as we get the rest we need, adjust to this new chapter of our lives, and I learn to type with just one hand.

In the meantime, be well, eat well, and I’ll talk to you soon!

    Dear Milan,
Welcome to the world! We’ve always been fans of your mother’s blog, we own all her books, and we’ve been to several of her ‘events’. I hope you’ll be like my last ‘bun’, 18 next month, Bac next month, born in Australia but raised in France, always an enthusiastic eater whose first word was ‘food’, grew up in the kitchens in several countries and can say this fluently in multiple languages: ‘i’m hungry, what’s for dinner?’ Less polite, despite stereotypes, in French: ‘ j’ai faim, on mange quand?’

  • G. Lovely

Congratulations! May Milan bring as much joy and meaning into your lives as my children have brought into mine.

  • Congratulations! Enjoy your new life together!

  • Huge congrats! Hooray for babies! :)

    Many congratulations :)

  • I wondered why you’d gone quiet! Many, many congratulations, and the warmest of welcomes to young Milan! Don’t even think about blogging for at least the next six weeks, other than the occasional place-holder – you need to spend this time getting to know him and learning how to be his mother. It gets better and better all the time, especially when he becomes interactive!

  • Mathieu Reynaud

  • Hannah

For lack of time, I don’t usually comment, but what’s more special than an addition to the family; and so you’re in my prayers today.

How wonderful are the names these days! In another blog I follow, the blogger recently had a daughter and named her India. And mmmmm, I love the name Milan, as well.

  • Kathy

Such happy news! Consider some way of wearing Milan (a sling, for example) and you can have your hands back. The closeness is wonderful and everyone is happy. Congratulations!

  • Cathy B

C’est une tres belle aventure qui se commence! Congratulations!

I know you probably have mommy-brain right now, so a gentle, small correction — the expression is to have “a bun in the oven”. Once the bun comes out, fully “baked”, as it were, it’s no longer referred to as such, and heavens, you couldn’t possibly think of yourself as an oven any longer, could you?

    All the best.

  • Congratulations Clotilde!!

  • Karla

Felicidades! Congratulations! Welcome to the world Milan!

  • Laura

Congratulations!! Lucky little Milan, to be born into a home filled with love and good food!

  • Congratulations! Enjoy the amazing ride you both just started!

looking forward to reading more about it…

  • I just came to your site for a recipe my husband and I have loved ever since we ate it – Chicken and Radish Salad with Avocado Green Goddess Dressing. I was new to cooking and I had never used anchovies before but I bravely pressed forth and we both were astounded at how perfectly those two tiny fish could impart such a beautiful flavor for the salad. I never commented on the recipe but here I am, commenting (and thanking you!) now.

I’m making the recipe again next week but thought I’d check in to see what new recipes you’ve created and I’m finding you with a baby! How awesome and many, many congratulations to you both. :)

  • Congratulations to you Clotilde and Maxence! What an adorable baby name too!

  • Thank you so very much, everyone, for your kind words and heartwarming thoughts, you have no idea how touched we are!

Clotilde, your site is a marvel! I find you intelligent, fun, resourceful, a great communicator, etc., etc.
I lived in Paris for two years and I miss it/will miss it for the rest of my life…When I read your articles, I reminisce my times there. I will definitely try several of your recipes, they look and sound delicious.
Congratulations on your little angel, I wish you all the best!

  • Congrats; so exciting. I am so happy for you both!

  • Big Congratulations Enormous joy & adjustments to your life.Best of luck in you new parental role.A quick very nutritious recipe for a day when you need feeding well & fast
Red lentil & sweet potato soup
1 onion- chopped & sauteed in olive oil
These are delicious additions for when you are not feeding. I suggest you keep it really simple at first. (cumin, coriander, ginger, garlic, cardamon seeds)
Add chopped red sweet potato approx 750gm
    3/4 Cup washed red lentils
    salt & pepper
Cover well with water. I add Massel chicken stock powder & less salt or vegetable stock
Bring to the boil. Turn down to simmer 30mins
Use a stick blender to briefly puree or use a potato masher directly in the pot. Its quite nice to have some texture. I used it 30 yrs ago for my 1st child!

    • Thanks so much for sharing, that soup sounds wonderful!

  • Theresa

Clotilde, how happy I was to log in after a long while to hear the news! Seems like life has taken you down some joyous paths since the early days of the blog. Felicitations!!

  • Uhh.. a new life to celebrate! Congrats! :)

  • OH.MY.GOD!!!!!!! I’m so sorry to be late to the party… MANY MANY CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! Awwww, how wonderful!! How’s the new motherhood thing going? If there’s anything (& I mean absolutely anything) that you need, let me know! – I remember, the first baby we had, every moment was so new, many many things puzzled us! LOL! And it was also a bit scary that this little-being, so dinky & fragile, depended on us as parents.
All the best to you Clotilde & I wish you & your family the best-est, brightest future together ahead! Love, Tamami xoxo

  • Dear Clotilde, so sorry to be so late with my congratulations. Having two small kids in the house (and third in the “oven”), I am very bad in checking even my favourite blogs for updates regularly. I only heard about the baby from David during out recent trip to Israel.
As you said on Twitter, it’s a very fertile year for foodbloggers – you, Kerrin, Molly, Anne (of Anne’s Food) – we’re a happy and fertile bunch indeed :)

    • And Luisa from Wednesday Chef, too! ^_^ Thanks so much for your kind words, and best wishes of perfect health for you and your baby!

  • Looks like I haven’t checked in for far too long to have missed such news… Félicitations, Clotilde!

  • may

A tardy Congrats!!! So exciting. Hope you are enjoying every moment. =)

  • Lilia

It is better late than never! Such a pleasure to find out about Milan’s arrival. Haven’t checked in to C&Z for a while as having had trouble with my password.

Wishing you and Maxence all the happiness in raising the little guy! There will be lots of fun even with some sleepless nights!

Love to all three of you!!!

  • Congratulations Clothide, Maxence and Milan!! I was so, so happy to hear your wonderful news about Milan’s arrival and your new little family.

We’ve never met, but as with your readers above, you have become a warm friend. I’ve read your newsletters and columns for years, bought your books and made your recipes, always enjoying your updates on Maxence, your neighbors and your wonderful attitude to life.

With each newsletter I asked myself if children were on the horizon for you and Maxence.

It wasn’t easy for us, but the births of our son Olivier and daughter Alexia when I was 40 and 45 were the best gifts God could give us! I know you and all of your many friends feel the same way!!

    Warmest regards,

  • Dear Clotilde,

Congratulations!! Mazal Tov! May Milan’s path be padded with roses!

And wishing you good nights’ sleep… (mine is 10 months old, and we’re getting there…)

    Warm wishes,

  • Congratulations on the birth of your lovely little boy!

I’ve only just found your blog. I was looking you up as my daughter and I are considering coming on the Guardian Masterclass in Paris and I wanted to know more about you.

I shall enjoy following your blog and catching up with as much as I can.

All the best to you and your family. :)
