French Gift Ideas for Father’s Day

French Gift Ideas for Father's Day

Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June in many countries in the world, including the United States and France. In 2017, we will celebrate la fête des pères on June 18.

If your Papa (or significant other, if you’re getting him something on behalf of your children!) is a lover of all things French, I have gathered a long list of French-inspired gift ideas that will show how much you love him, and how highly you think of him.

Not knowing the particular tastes of your own father, I readily admit to playing into a number of gender generalizations; I hope you’ll forgive me. Feel free to draw even more ideas from my French Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day and my Best Gifts for the French-Loving Cook.

Bonne fête to Papas everywhere!

Pencil holder and desk organizer
Pencil holder and desk organizer

A desk organizer or pencil holder is a typical gift made by French kids at school for their Papa, who then think of them every day at the office. If you prefer to buy it than craft it, I like this leather one.

Vacuum wine sealer

Vacuum wine pump

Handy and efficient to preserve wine in half-empty bottles; Maxence and I use this one all the time.

Wine decanter spouts

Wine decanter spouts

It’s frustrating to pour wine and have that little drop dribble down the bottle and stain your tablecloth. No more with these reusable pouring spouts!

Decanting wine carafe

Decanting wine carafe

Some precious wines need a little decanting time to express their full personality, and owning a decanting carafe makes one feel very accomplished. If you can, get your dad the matching stand to dry the carafe fully between uses.

Wine/Beer Passion Journal

Wine and Beer Passion Journals

If your father is serious about his wine or his beer, get him a passion journal to organize his tasting notes!

Metro map of French wine regions

Wine map

This is such a fun print: it represents all the French growing regions in the style of a metro map. Get this simple picture frame for it.

French Gift Ideas for Father's Day : Does your Papa love all things French? This Father's Day, treat him to one of my French Father's Day Gift Ideas!

French Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

French Gift Ideas for Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is celebrated the second Sunday of May in North America. In France, it is the last Sunday in May. (Unless that falls on Pentecost Sunday, in which case it’s the first Sunday in June. Still with me?)

In 2017, Americans will celebrate Mother’s Day on May 14; the French will celebrate la fête des mères on May 28.

If your mother loves all things French, this is the time to pamper her inner Parisienne! You could even surprise her with an encore gift on French Mother’s Day.

French children usually craft some kind of project at school for their maman — most iconically, un collier de pâtes, a necklace made of dried pasta — and graduate to buying her flowers, chocolates, or beauty products when they are older.

Here are some wonderful, high-quality French gift ideas I’ve hand-picked with love so you can tell your amazing mother how amazing she is. And if you’re a new mother, you are fully entitled to buying any one of these for your amazing self, obv.

For even more French-inspired ideas, check out my Best Gifts for the French-Loving Cook! All of them will work as a French Mother’s Day gift.

Bonne fête to Mamans everywhere!

Best Books for Francophiles

So you’ve had a look at my best gifts for French-loving cooks and got some nice ideas from that. But what if a book is the kind of gift you’re after? Here’s a selection of ten books that will delight the francophile on your list, books that transport the reader straight to Paris and around France, in exploration and celebration of French culture.

There’s going to be relatable stories, colorful characters, insightful comments, i-want-to-steal-this prose, laugh-out-loud moments, and of course, excellent food. Are you ready for this?

This is one in a series of themed gift guides I am publishing this week; here’s the complete list of my best gift guides.

The Food and Wine of France: Eating and Drinking from Champagne to Provence
By Edward Behr

The Food and Wine of France

For the past few years it has seemed fashionable to diss French cuisine, to call it dead or (worse! so much worse!) irrelevant. While I think it gave a certain sphere of our gastronomic scene a much-needed kick in the pants, the truth is French cuisine is inventive and exciting as ever. Edward Behr has written this book to make this very argument. From the founding editor of the top-notch independent magazine The Art of Eating, this is both an investigation and a travel journal, full of relatable stories and characters that teach and inspire.

When In French: Love in a Second Language
By Lauren Collins

When in French

Lauren Collins is the Paris correspondent for the New Yorker (I’ll let that sink in for a minute). She has lived in a few different countries, English-speaking and not, and is married to a Frenchman, Olivier. Her book is an exploration of the many ways in which language defines us in love and in life, individually and as a culture. It is supremely well written, with lots of off-beat turns of phrase that take make you laugh out in delight, and I was tickled by the material and observations she presents.

The Only Street in Paris: Life on the Rue des Martyrs
By Elaine Sciolino

The Only Street in Paris

Newly released in paperback, Elaine Sciolino’s book takes the reader on an enchanting walk down one of the most charming, and steepest, streets in Paris: rue des Martyrs. As a local — this is my hood! — I recognized all of its quirks, and learned some fascinating facts though her lively, engaging prose. A must-read for anyone who dreams of adopting a Paris street as their home. Now available in French as well, under the title: La Dernière Rue de Paris.

Bakers Gonna Bake Print

A cute handmade print to light up any baker’s kitchen! (You will need a frame to go with it, such as this one or this one.)

Earlywood Spatulas

I am a devoted fan of the handcrafted utensils from Earlywood, and this “trifecta” set is perfect for the baker: a spatula to stir custards, a scraper to loosen cookies from the baking sheet, and a spreader for fillings and frostings. (And of course: many more uses in the kitchen beyond just baking!)

OXO Digital Scale

If you’re serious about baking, using a digital scale is a must, and this is the one I have used and loved for several years. It is precise and sturdy, beautiful and easy to clean, and it has a pull-out display for when you’re weighing large bowls or pots.

Wraparound linen apron [Etsy]
